How to Make Great Movie Popcorn at Home

One of the greatest things about going to a theater to watch a film is the amazing movie theater popcorn they serve. Watching movies at home has the downside of not having access to a concession stand. Rather than spending an arm and a leg at theaters, you can make your own movie theater popcorn in the comfort of your own home. The days of weak microwave popcorn are past when you follow our recommendations on how to make great movie popcorn at home.

  1. First: You got the right stuff

Start with the right ingredients. Oil is the most important component; coconut oil is the key to the great flavor in movie theater popcorn. It also helps produce the golden color of the popped kernels.

  2. Second: Go big or go home

Popcorn kernels come in white and yellow varieties. The color has little influence on the popcorn flavor, but yellow kernels tend to produce a larger popped product - like the popcorn you see at the theater.

  3. Third: Shake it like a salt shaker

The most important ingredient is salt. While any salt will suffice to flavor your popcorn, using a butter-flavored salt helps to simulate the movie theater popcorn taste.

  4. Fourth: Get it poppin'

Once you've amassed the necessary ingredients, you're ready to start popping. While this is easiest if you have a home popcorn machine, using the stove top is no trouble. In a large pot, add a tablespoon of kernels, two tablespoons of coconut oil and half of a teaspoon of salt. For larger batches, double or triple these ingredients as desired while maintaining the same ratios. Place the pot over low heat and stir it continuously. Your gourmet popcorn is done within minutes!
